You might think of the 2022 Toyota Camry and 2022 Toyota Corolla as just two cars, but the variety offered among these model lines means you’ll need to make several decisions to find the right car for you. Both cars offer two gas engines and a hybrid powertrain. The mid-size Camry can be equipped with front- or all-wheel drive, while the compact Corolla comes as a sedan or a hatchback and with the option of a manual or automatic transmission.

The Camry is the larger of the two with a more spacious and better-equipped interior, especially in its top trims. It also has the option for a V6 engine with more power than the base four cylinder. The less expensive Corolla offers the versatility of a hatchback or sedan, and better fuel economy in non-hybrid models, while the electrified versions of both cars get the same impressive fuel efficiency rating.

Toyota Camry vs. 2022 Toyota Corolla: Price

The Camry is available in a dizzying 12 trims. There are five trims with a 2.5L four-cylinder engine (202 to 205 hp) priced from around $27,000 to $32,500, with all-wheel drive available for $1,400. Toyota only offers the 301-hp V6 engine with front-wheel drive in two trims starting from around $34,000. The range also includes five hybrids priced from around $29,000 to $34,500.

The Corolla lineup, also with 12 variants, is just as complex, although all trims are front-wheel drive only. The eight sedan versions are priced from around $21,500 to $30,000 with a 139-hp four-cylinder base engine or available 169-hp four-cylinder. There’s a single 121-hp hybrid sedan trim priced around $25,000. The hatchback three trims cost between $22,000 and $25,500. All but the hybrid offer either a manual or automatic transmission.

Toyota Camry vs. 2022 Toyota Corolla: Interior

The roomiest option for passengers is the Camry with up to 100 cu. ft. of interior volume. All Corolla sedans have 89 cu. ft. for passengers while the hatchback has just 85 cu. ft. The Camry also has a larger trunk with 15 cu. ft. versus 13 cu. ft. for the Corolla sedan. The Corolla hatchback, however, offers the most cargo room of the lot with 18 cu. ft. behind the second row.

The Camry has standard dual-zone automatic climate control and an eight-way power driver’s seat. The Corolla has single-zone automatic climate control and a six-way manually adjustable driver’s seat. Both have a standard 7.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, but the Camry adds a 9.0-inch touchscreen and JBL audio standard on higher trims. The Corolla offers an 8.0-inch touchscreen on its higher trims with a JBL audio system only as an option.

Toyota Camry vs. 2022 Toyota Corolla: Fuel Economy

If fuel economy is high on your list, you don’t necessarily have to settle for the smaller car. The most efficient Camry and Corolla—the hybrid models—are both rated at 52 combined mpg. Choose a gas engine and the Corolla wins with 35 mpg combined in the hatchback or 34 mpg combined for the sedan. The best fuel economy the four-cylinder Camry offers is 32 mpg combined while the V6 versions earn 25 or 26 mpg, depending on trim. All-wheel-drive, four-cylinder Camrys split the difference at 28 or 29 mpg.

I write about cars. A lot. That's because I’ve always loved cars and the fact that they regularly hand me the keys to shiny new automobiles so I can write about them is a constant source of amazement. I cover breaking news, write reviews, and attend auto shows and new vehicle launches across the country. The more winding the road and the more unknown the route, the better.
