Review QuickTakes:

When Americans need a midsize sedan, the 2022 Toyota Camry automatically springs to mind. For decades, this faithful Toyota has proven itself to be dependable, practical, and efficient. Today the Camry remains a solid choice in the segment, with plenty of safety tech, style, and performance, but it is lacking in roominess compared to rivals.

What’s New for the 2022 Toyota Camry?

Following a light refresh for the 2021 model year, the Camry lineup carries over with few changes. New standard equipment includes dual-zone climate control (except TRD) and heated side mirrors, and a new SE Hybrid Nightshade trim arrives with a blacked-out exterior treatment. Otherwise, the only changes pertain to paint colors.

2022 Toyota Camry Configurations

When choosing a new 2022 Camry, you must first decide whether you want a gas-only or hybrid powertrain. Choose the former, and you can get all-wheel drive as an option with the car’s standard 4-cylinder engine. Then you need to select between the softer LE/XLE trim lineup or the sportier SE/XSE variants. A version tuned by Toyota Racing Development (TRD) is also available.

Below, you’ll find the trim level details:

Camry LE – Though basic, the Camry LE includes cloth seats with 8-way power adjustment for the driver, dual-zone automatic climate control, a nearly complete collection of Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ driving assistance and collision avoidance technologies, and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone mirroring, connected services including Wi-Fi access, and satellite radio.

Camry XLE – This trim level adds upscale equipment, including 18-inch alloy wheels, passive keyless entry, leather upholstery, simulated wood interior trim, ambient interior lighting, an 8-way power-adjustable front passenger’s seat, heated front seats, rear-seat air vents, a larger 9-inch touchscreen display, wireless smartphone charging, a blind-spot warning system with rear cross-traffic warning,

Camry SE – The Camry SE builds on LE trim with sportier exterior styling, 18-inch alloy wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and simulated leather seat bolsters with unique fabric inserts.

Camry SE Nightshade – Choose the SE Nightshade version of the Camry SE, and the car features a blacked-out exterior treatment.

Camry XSE – The XSE trim builds on the SE with 19-inch alloy wheels, full LED headlights and taillights, a dual exhaust system with four outlets, metal interior trim, and most of the same features in the XLE.

Camry TRD – Tuned by Toyota Racing Development, the Camry TRD adds a standard V6 engine to SE equipment, plus 19-inch wheels with a matte-black finish, performance-tuned suspension and exhaust systems, bigger brakes, a brake-based cornering assist system, and additional structural bracing. An aerodynamic body kit with a pedestal-style rear spoiler, selectively applied black and red detailing inside and out, and aluminum pedals are also standard, along with a single-zone automatic climate control system, a fixed rather than a split-folding rear seat, and blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning.

The Camry Hybrid is available in the LE, SE, SE Nightshade, XSE, and XLE trims. Each is the same as the FWD non-hybrid version, but with the efficient hybrid powertrain.

My first word was “car.” That’s what I’m told, anyway. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been obsessed with them. The design. The engineering. The performance. And the purpose. I’m a car enthusiast who loves to drive, but I’m also most interested in the cars, trucks, and SUVs that people actually buy. Anybody can tell you that a sports car is fast. What you need to know is whether or not you should buy that new SUV, and why. My life purpose is to help you make that decision.
