Wonderful German Luxury Sedan

07/02/2023

Bought my 2019 A8 (3.0T) in early Spring 2022 and have been loving it ever since. Bought with 23k miles and now with 41, I'm happy to report its been care-free... and yes, with all the features, I was a little worried about things going wrong at first, but so far, so good. Outstanding travel/road trip car, but it's also excellent in town (the 4-wheel steering option is a game changer!), and it's even impressively agile on windy roads for its size. The turbocharged V6 is no slouch - this car is NOT underpowered, and it gets better gas mileage than the 2015 A6 I traded in after 110k miles (I'm getting 30-32 MPG highway with three 200-pound adults and their luggage). City mileage is better too, presumably due to the "mild hybrid" drivetrain. But the creme-de-la-creme is the serene and oh-so comfortable interior. It is uncluttered, classy, and above reproach - a place I love to be every chance I get. I look forward to every quiet and comfortable moment I can spend in this car, even if it's just parked! And, I was surprised to find how much I love that I got one that's optioned-up, because I would not have ordered all the extras if building one new - - but I will vouch for the value of all of them if you are considering ordering one. The "base" Bose stereo is quite good, and that is one of the few non-upgrades I have. The upgraded leather, interior lighting, insulated glass, climate options (ionizer and scent are far more appreciated than I would have guessed), and the wonderfully-effective seat ventilation is a must-have. The seat massage option sounds silly and decadent, but on longer trips when even in this wonderful space I get road fatigue, I can stretch out the miles between stops by activating one of the several "massage" options and reducing back and butt fatigue. And the one thing I would never have cared about until owning a large car with it: 4-wheel steering. I now wish we had it on all our family's cars, as it "shrinks" this rather long car down to compact-car size as far as turning radius for super-easy parking and navigating tight spaces like parking garages. The MMI interface is lightning fast (instant) and, after a short learning period (maybe up to a couple weeks if you're a boomer like me). Audi did a fantastic job of moving from the remote knob to a "haptic" touch screen (and excellent voice-control options if you prefer that instead). The two-tier programmable interior lighting is flat-dead gorgeous at night. The trunk has a huge, flat surface area, and I love the no-touch open and push-button closer (a-la SUV or minivan hatch). Even the soft-close doors are a nice touch, along with so many other thoughtful features that take away the crudeness of being transported in a machine (wink). Windshield washers that do not spray bystanders or passengers getting in or out, super-quiet windows and shades, and even door locks that make no noise when opened or closed (fun fact: People stand and wait for me to unlock the doors, so I just look at them and smile until they try the handle to find its open - lol). The touch-open door handles inside are great. Lift your hand from the armrest and put a finger under the latch... One small tug and the door latch releases - kinda pops to part-open. Pretty much everything about this car is designed to be quite or in some other way put its driver and passengers at ease. Some auto journalists have even said they almost have a hard time staying awake because the interior is such a serene place to be! Lastly, did I mention the A8 is quite an attractive car? I love its looks and get an incredible number of compliments everywhere I go (it does have the chrome package, which looks amazing on the dark blue body). One gentleman swooned over the car as I was checking into a hotel. He later saw me inside and asked several questions about it. The conversation ended with him saying, "I know an Audi dealership owner and will be ordering one of these when I get home from vacation". If I sound biased, I am. I have been in love with this car since I bought it and hope I can afford to always have one this nice when it comes time to sell/trade. Its my fourth consecutive Audi in 23 years, and I am hoping to get the same care-free 100,ooo miles I got from the previous three (one A4 and two A6's).

A couple of annoyances but overall a solid car

06/26/2022

Honest review; the 3.0 transmission stutters often especially when the auto on off is allowed to operate. My solution is to always put it in S mode sports mode so the transmission shifts must better less lag. Then there’s the annoyances through the interactive computer since you said certain things they don’t stay every time you have to go back in and reset certain settings just annoyances the S class was much more user-friendly without those annoyances.
